Emergency Food Assistance and Nutrition

One of the primary objectives of Al-Khair Foundation is to ensure food and nutrition for underprivileged people. In any natural disaster, the most affected are the disadvantaged in society. Therefore, whenever natural calamities like floods, cyclones, or tidal surges occur, Al-Khair Foundation rushes to provide food assistance to the starving. Additionally, during the holy month of Ramadan, Al-Khair Foundation strives to ensure that poor people can fast with two meals a day. To ensure their nutrition, the food package includes rice, lentils, potatoes, powdered milk, eggs, sugar, salt, and oil.

In the last three years alone, from 2022 to 2024, Al-Khair Foundation has provided food assistance to 125,000 underprivileged individuals. Under the program, their food and nutrition were ensured for at least three weeks during times of need.

Safe Water Provision

Al-Khair Foundation has been tirelessly working to provide safe water across the country. From 2022 to 2024, the organization worked to raise awareness about safe water and ensure its availability in Kushtia, Lalmonirhat, Rajbari, Magura, Cox's Bazar, Khulna, Gopalganj, and Kishoreganj. To achieve this goal, 87 deep tube wells and 893 shallow tube wells were installed in various remote areas and marginalized communities. Since each of these tube wells was installed in public places, over the past three years, Al-Khair Foundation has ensured access to safe drinking water for at least 11,105 families.

Housing Projects

Having a home to return to at the end of the day is one of the biggest symbols of socio-economic security for an individual. While government initiatives exist in this regard, Al-Khair Foundation, within its capacity and with the help of benevolent donors, has been implementing housing projects for the underprivileged. For families affected by climate change or natural or economic disasters, the foundation has taken initiatives to provide at least a roof over their heads.

Under this program, a total of 69 homes were built for impoverished and homeless families in 2022, 2023, and 2024. These homes were handed over to 69 families in 12 districts, including Rangpur, Munshiganj, Madaripur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Feni, Noakhali, Barguna, Khulna, and Cox's Bazar.

Distribution of relief to flood victims

The effects of climate change have not only increased the frequency of cyclones and tidal surges but have also intensified the extremity and unpredictability of winter, summer, and monsoon seasons. Floods, flash floods, and cold waves have also become more severe, leaving disadvantaged people more vulnerable. To support these marginalized individuals, Al-Khair Foundation has undertaken the following initiatives:

  • Food Assistance for Flood Victims: Between 2022 and 2024, Al-Khair Foundation distributed 4,000 food packets and 5,000 dry food packets to those affected by floods and cyclones. This assistance reached 9,000 families, providing food for 45,000 people for three weeks in disaster-affected areas such as Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Khulna, and Barguna.
  • Support for Cyclone Victims: The frequent low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal, resulting from climate change, have caused recurring cyclones and tidal surges, severely affecting the lives of people along Bangladesh’s 483-kilometer southern coastal belt. Along with professional losses, cyclones and tidal surges have caused infrastructural damage to homes and communities, forcing many daily wage earners to migrate. To support these individuals, Al-Khair Foundation has provided food assistance to cyclone victims, along with 200 bundles of tin for repairing damaged homes.

Special Initiatives During Ramadan

Al-Khair Foundation generally designs its project plans with the aim of ensuring food security for the ultra-poor. Since its establishment, the foundation has been tirelessly working to provide adequate assistance to the impoverished during the holy month of Ramadan. Over the past three years, Al-Khair Foundation has conducted its Ramadan programs in three distinct segments: distribution of food packages, provision of iftar meals, and distribution of Eid gifts. Additionally, every year, the foundation places significant emphasis on distributing Qurbani meat among underprivileged communities during Eid-ul-Adha.

  • Food Packages: Al-Khair Foundation prioritizes distributing essential grocery items in its food assistance program. At the beginning of Ramadan, these food packages are distributed among the impoverished. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, the foundation provided food aid to 16,100 families, as mentioned earlier. During the same period, food assistance also reached 3,625 families in the Rohingya camps.
  • Iftar: To ensure that the impoverished can break their fast with dignity after a long day of fasting, Al-Khair Foundation runs a month-long iftar distribution program during Ramadan. Over the past three years, the foundation has distributed a total of 102,500 iftar packs.
  • Eid Gifts: During Ramadan, Al-Khair Foundation distributes Eid gift packages across various regions of Bangladesh. In times of inflation, many struggle to meet daily expenses before Eid. Therefore, the foundation joyfully undertakes the task of sharing the Eid celebration with everyone. These gift packages are distributed two to three days before Eid, aiming to ensure that disadvantaged families can fully enjoy the festivities. The packages include vermicelli, powdered milk, sugar, fragrant rice, spices, new sarees, lungis, and attar. Through this initiative, Al-Khair Foundation managed to spread the joy of Eid to a total of 6,000 families, benefiting around 30,000 ultra-poor individuals from 2022 to 2024. During the same period, special Eid gifts were distributed among 1,000 children.
  • Qurbani: Every year, Al-Khair Foundation organizes Qurbani through the collective contributions of donors. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed among impoverished and needy families. The foundation's volunteers and staff work diligently on the ground to ensure smooth distribution, prioritizing support for destitute, widowed, and childless families. Through this initiative, Qurbani meat was distributed to 28,050 families in 2022, 27,450 families in 2023, and 24,780 families in 2024.

Mosque Construction

Building mosques in various parts of the country is considered one of the most important initiatives of Al-Khair Foundation. Mosques are sacred places for Muslims. To ensure that devout people can practice their religion properly, Al-Khair Foundation undertakes mosque construction projects every year. In the last three years, the foundation constructed 41 mosques in Mymensingh, Cox's Bazar, Barishal, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Thakurgaon, Bogura, Tangail, Chattogram, Gaibandha, Madaripur, Bhola, and Cumilla.

Livelihood Improvement

Al-Khair Foundation is working to improve the quality of life for marginalized people through various initiatives:
  • Orphan and Hafiz Sponsorship: This project aims to provide equal opportunities for orphaned children to grow up just like other children. It also includes poor children engaged in memorizing the Holy Quran. The foundation ensures food, educational materials, healthcare, clothing, and other essential needs for orphaned and hafiz children aged 6 to 14. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, a total of 2,345 orphaned children received support through this program. The project is ongoing in Sylhet, Cox's Bazar, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajbari, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Patuakhali, Barguna, Satkhira, Bogura, Feni, Barishal, and Bhola.
  • Blind Hafiz Support: In 2023, Al-Khair Foundation launched a separate support program for blind hafiz students. The program ensures educational materials, food, and financial incentives for blind hafiz students. In 2023 and 2024, 100 blind hafiz students in Dhaka and Cox's Bazar received assistance through this program.
  • Wheelchair Distribution: To reduce mobility barriers for the disabled, the foundation distributed 200 wheelchairs in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
  • Sewing Machine Distribution: The foundation distributed 200 sewing machines in 2022, 2023, and 2024 to rural, illiterate, or semi-literate women to enable them to become economically self-sufficient.
  • Dowry-Free Marriages: In 2023 and 2024, Al-Khair Foundation organized dowry-free marriages for 140 poor boys and girls in Sylhet and Rangpur. The foundation covered all expenses and provided household items and livelihood resources like rickshaws/vans and sewing machines to the newlyweds.

Education

Al-Khair Foundation aims to work towards the expansion of education. To this end, the organization has initiated activities on a smaller scale. Since 2023, Al-Khair Foundation has established the Khorshed Ali Primary School in Pabna, where 80 underprivileged students are receiving free education.

The projects of Al-Khair Foundation have been made possible through the generous support of donors. These humanitarian initiatives have made significant contributions to the lives of the poor and underprivileged people across Bangladesh. The foundation is committed to continuing these efforts and expanding its activities in the future.

Healthcare

To provide healthcare to underprivileged people, Al-Khair Foundation has been implementing health service programs. Through its medical camps and eye camps, the foundation offers free medical services, cataract surgeries, essential medicines, and eyeglasses to impoverished individuals.

  • Cataract Surgeries: In Bangladesh, many people face eye problems that require glasses or other treatments. According to a BBC report, around 950,000 people in Bangladesh are visually impaired, while approximately 7.5 million suffer from moderate to severe eye problems. Many visually impaired individuals face various challenges, one of which is cataracts. Due to the high cost of cataract surgeries, low-income people in rural areas are often forced to accept blindness without treatment. With a mission to restore vision to underprivileged individuals, Al-Khair Foundation has been working in rural areas, offering free eye treatment and cataract surgeries. By organizing eye camps across districts like Dhaka, Mymensingh, Patuakhali, and Moulvibazar, the foundation has provided free eye care services, medicines, glasses, and cataract surgeries to 12,243 individuals.
  • Medical Camps: Religious gatherings or sermons in Bangladesh attract a large number of people. Al-Khair Foundation utilizes these events to set up medical camps, offering health checkups to rural attendees and providing meals simultaneously. Over the past three years, these camps have served nearly 1,000 people with free healthcare and medicines and provided one-time meals to 30,000 individuals.
  • One Pound General Hospital: Located just 4 kilometers from the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bishwanath Upazila of Sylhet, the construction of the One Pound General Hospital has begun. The five-story hospital project commenced in 2023, and it is expected to become operational by mid-2025. Once inaugurated, it will provide accessible healthcare services to residents of Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Sunamganj.

Rohingya Support

Since the establishment of the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Al-Khair Foundation Bangladesh has been actively working to provide housing, food, clothing, and clean water for the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. The foundation ensures emergency support within 24 hours through the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC). Its activities in the Kutupalong Camp (Camp 1 West) include health posts, WASH programs, and food assistance, benefiting 15,000 camp residents.

  • Healthcare for Rohingyas: Al-Khair Foundation has been operating a health post in the Balukhali Rohingya refugee camp since 2017 to provide medical services to displaced Rohingya refugees. To combat the spread and impact of infectious diseases, the foundation has been offering free healthcare services in the camp. Between 2022 and 2024, approximately 70,000 Rohingyas received free medical services through the health post.
  • WASH Program: Since the Rohingya influx in 2017, Al-Khair Foundation Bangladesh has implemented a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program in the camps. Its activities include installing deep tube wells, building toilets and washrooms, constructing drainage systems, providing water purification pumps, managing solid waste, promoting hygiene awareness, and distributing hygiene kits based on community needs.

    1. Safe Water Supply: Over the past three years, Al-Khair Foundation has purified river water and supplied clean drinking water twice daily to 10,000 individuals in Camp 1 West through a pipeline system. Additionally, 57 deep and shallow tube wells have been managed to ensure 20 liters of safe water daily for 15,000 camp residents.

    2. Toilet and Washroom Maintenance: The foundation regularly maintains and cleans approximately 100 toilets it has built, ensuring they remain operational for daily use by Rohingya families. Similarly, washrooms are repaired and cleaned regularly.

    3. Solid Waste Management: In the densely populated camp, cleanliness is critical to prevent disease. Al-Khair Foundation has established a comprehensive solid waste management system in its operational area. Each family receives two bins—one red for organic waste and one green for non-organic waste. Volunteers collect waste daily, segregating non-organic waste for proper disposal and using organic waste to produce compost fertilizer. This fertilizer is distributed among beneficiaries. Drains are also cleaned regularly.

    4. Hygiene Promotion: Through courtyard meetings, the foundation's skilled staff implements hygiene promotion programs emphasizing behavior change, proper practices, handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management, gender sensitivity, and stopping open defecation. These meetings are attended by men, women, teenagers, and adolescents.

    5. Beneficiary Engagement Program: To ensure beneficiary participation, the foundation has formed various committees, such as User Groups, WASH Committees, and Block Committees. These groups are trained, assigned responsibilities, and regularly monitored.

  • Emergency Food Assistance: During the two fire incidents in Balukhali Camp in 2023 and 2024, Al-Khair Foundation provided food supplies to 1,200 families to combat food insecurity. Additionally, special food assistance was provided to 3,625 families during Ramadan over the past three years.

As a result of these initiatives, the operational areas have witnessed improvements in health security and living standards. Effective inclusive toilet systems have reduced open defecation and increased bathing facilities. Handwashing with soap has become more common, waterborne diseases have decreased, and beneficiary participation in the programs has increased.
